Approach to molecular characterization of partially and completely untyped samples in an Indian rotavirus surveillance program.

•A strategy for rotavirus genotyping and resolution of untypable samples for surveillance program is defined.•Untypability of samples may be due to false positive results in the enzyme immunoassay.•A typing strategy based on available primers can resolve the majority of initially untyped samples.•Sequencing approaches may be required for new or unusual strains.
