Improving arithmetic performance with number sense training: an investigation of underlying mechanism.

•A causal influence from the approximate number system to math was tested in adults.•Non-symbolic approximate arithmetic training enhances exact symbolic arithmetic.•Approximate number comparison and matching do not enhance exact symbolic arithmetic.•Symbol ordering and memory training also do not yield similar benefits.•Nonverbal quantity manipulation may be the key to the causal influence on math.
