Abstract
•Structure of Mekabu fucoidan (MF) was investigated by spectroscopic methods.•It was defined as branched partially O-acetylated and sulphated fucogalactan.•Antiviral effects of MF was tested on mice infected with avian influenza A viruses.•Fucoidan suppressed virus yields and increased production of antibodies.•MF could be used for the prevention of viral infection.
