Hyperalgesic and edematogenic effects of Secapin-2, a peptide isolated from Africanized honeybee (Apis mellifera) venom.

•Secapin was described in bee venom 38 years ago, and despite of this nothing is known about its action.•A novel variant form of the peptide Secapin was isolated from honeybee venom.•The novel peptide was named Secapin-2.•Secapin-2 induced hyperalgesia and edematogenic response in rat paws.•The actions of Secapin-2 occurred involved the activation of lipoxygenase pathway.
