•Ticks possess a multi-domain serine protease closely related to the Limulus Clotting Factor C.•Expression of tick Factor C (IrFC) responds to injury suggesting its role in hemolymph clotting and/or wound healing.•IrFC is involved in phagocytosis of Gram-negative bacteria by tick hemocytes.
