•A multiplex PCR based on the replicons of BHR IncA/C, IncN, IncP, IncQ and IncW plasmids was developed.•The multiplex PCR can be used to quickly perform molecular epidemiology investigations.•A survey of BHR plasmids in gram-negative bacilli strains isolated from patients was performed.
