•GII.4 is the most common genotype causing acute gastroenteritis in Finnish children.•12 different GII.4 variants were identified in norovirus AGE cases between 1998 and 2013.•Epidemic peak years were associated with novel GII.4 variants.•Similar changes in epitopes of P2 domain in sporadic GII.4 AGE cases as in outbreaks.
