•The immunogenicity and efficacy of IIV are not completely satisfactory in children.•OM-85 BV does not seem to increase the humoral and cell-mediated immune response to IIV.•Combined OM-85 and IIV seems to reduce respiratory morbidity in children with RRTIs.•Combined OM-85 and IIV seems to be safe and well tolerated.
