•Pregnant and non-pregnant rats were gavaged with either melamine or cyanuric acid.•Melamine treated dams had more early and late fetal deaths.•Melamine and cyanuric acid were found in amniotic fluid.•Renal crystals form following exposure to either melamine or cyanuric acid.•Crystals have different structure than those formed following combined exposure.
