Abstract
•The dietary safety of oleic-rich microalgal oil produced by a heterotrophic fermentation process was assessed.•Oleic-rich oil (⩽5000μg/plate) was non-mutagenic in Salmonella typhimurium and Escherichia coli tester strains.•Oleic-rich oil was non-clastogenic in mouse bone marrow after a single intraperitoneal injection of 2000mg/kg bw.•Dietary NOAEL of oleic-rich oil for rats in a 13-week repeated-dose study was 100,000ppm, the highest concentration tested.•Based on consumption, the oral NOAEL for oleic-rich oil in rats was 5200 (male) and 6419 (female) mg/kg bw/day.
