•HIV-1 Env expressing replication competent vaccinia m8Δ prime/Sendai virus vector boost elicited both long-lasting cellular and humoral immunities.•VV m8Δ vectors containing different promoters activate different arms of the immune system.•The vaccine regimen can be optimized to selectively induce either cellular or humoral immune response.
