•We analyzed the effects of vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) on amygdaloid kindling (AK).•VNS applied in stage I induces a delay to reach stage VI of AK.•VNS applied in stage II, III, and IV is non-protective against AK development.•VNS may modulate thalamo-cortical and cortico-thalamic excitability.
