•The chemical to induce PCC has influence on the dose–effect curve coefficients.•Depending on dose, different proportions of PCC in various cell cycle phases were observed.•PCC cells in various cell phases show variable yields of chromosome aberrations.•CalA induced PCC rings are in general Poisson distributed and useful to discriminate partial body exposure.
