Molecular typing of the local HIV-1 epidemic in Serbia

•We analyzed HIV-1 molecular epidemiology and dynamics of viral transmission in Serbia.•Predominance of subtype B was found with subtype G as the most prevalent non-B subtype.•The prevailing risk for HIV infection in Serbia has changed from IDUs to MSM transmission.•Local HIV transmission clusters are highly associated with MSM and subtype B.•Epidemic spread of HIV in Serbia within the local network started in the beginning of 90s.
