They sought medical attention because of fatigue and malaise; headache and muscle pains were either not present or so minor as to be overlooked. Their hematocrits ranged from 27 to 32%. The anemia was hypoproliferative, with low reticulocyte counts and adequate iron stores in the bone marrow.Thorough investigation failed to demonstrate malignancy, infection, or other cause for the anemia. In each, an erythrocyte sedimentation rate greater than 100 mm/hr prompted a biopsy of an asymptomatic temporal artery. In four of the seven patients giant-cell arteritis was found.All...
