What name hides behind E.T.? In the quest for its own identity, mankind has continuously explored its environment, and very early perceived the concept of Otherness. The emergence of the ideas of Giordano Bruno and Bernard Le Bouyer, marquis de Fontenelle, recognizing our nongeocentric universe and hypothesizing the plurality of inhabited worlds and the possibility of life diffused throughout the whole universe. Based on the movie Avatar, I will try to show how E. T., which illustrates Otherness, questions our conception of what forms the unity of the living or its infinite diversity. The most incredible fictions may just be a mirror of what how we see ourselves.
