Abstract
In this paper, a new method is proposed for ampacity calculations of deeply installed cables. Two factors make these types of installations different from more common situations of cables located up to five meters underground. On the one hand, the time constant of the soil layer above the cable trench is very large, resulting in a very slow conductor temperature rise when the cable is first loaded, and, on the other hand, the weekly and yearly load-cycle variations can be taken into account to take the advantage of the greater laying depth. Both issues are explored in this paper. This paper introduces the concept of the equivalent laying depth which makes it possible to use the rating rules applicable to the steady-state conditions and avoid transient analysis.
