Abstract
We show that in single-mode fibre transmission the width of the output optical pulse assumes a minimum as a function of input optical pulse width. Therefore there exists an optimal input pulse width depending on the fibre length, the operating wavelength and the spectral width. The optimal input pulse width is proportional to the cubic root of fibre length. for purely monochromatic light sources operating at the dispersion minimum, in which case the optimal input pulse width is proportional to the cubic root of fibre length.
