Determination of halosulfuron-methyl herbicide in sugarcane juice and tomato by capillary electrophoresis–tandem mass spectrometry

•A CE–MS/MS method for halosulfuron-methyl in sugarcane and tomato is introduced.•The method has good linearity (R2>0.992) up to 100ppb (μgkg−1).•Recovery values for levels from 10 to 50ppb were in the range of 96–104%.•The LOD for halosulfuron-methyl in sugarcane and tomato was 2ppb.•The LOD is below the maximum residue limits for USA and European Union.
