•SNP rs12064957(SDHC), rs11540478(IDH2) and rs1414493(FH) were associated with OS.•SNP rs13173911(SDHA) and rs4932158(IDH2) were associated with RFS.•Unfavorable genotypes showed a significant cumulative effect on OS and RFS.•SNP rs1414493(FH) was the primary risk factor contributing to OS of NSCLC.•SNP rs4932158(IDH2) was the primary risk factor contributing to RFS of NSCLC.
