•Detyrosinated tubulin is able to inhibit the NKA activity.•Erythrocytes of hypertensive subjects have a reduced content and activity of TTL.•GluTub levels and NKA activity are related to erythrocyte deformability.•The mechanism explains involvement of tubulin in hypertension.
