•A population sample of 223 Greek individuals from nine geographical areas.•Five sets of forensic genetic markers were used.•NGM SElect™, DIPplex®, SNPforID 49plex, Argus X-12, PowerPlex® Y23 System.•Statistically significant levels of LD in two X-chromosome linkage groups.•No statistically significant population structure in the Greek population.
