•Familial spontaneous epileptic cat (FSEC) represents a genetic model of MTLE.•Hippocampal volume (HV) in FSECs was measured using 3T MRI.•Asymmetric ratio in FSECs was significantly higher than in controls.•The smaller side of HV in FSECs was smaller than the mean HV in controls.
