Abstract
Fundamental principle of wastewater treatment by natural freezing (WTNF) is discussed with specifying the binary phase diagram for a kind of simulated wastewater with one contaminant X. Three current applications of WTNF are outlined among which unidirectional downward freezing (UDF) is emphatically introduced. The main influencing factors for UDF are reviewed. Utilization of WTNF as a pretreatment or alternative wastewater treatment in winter is proposed. Facilities maintenance, wastewater storage and model prediction control are problems needed further researches.
