Abstract
The purpose of this study was to continue our earlier studies on the effects of deferiprone (DFP) in aluminum chelation: the determination of aluminum in rats' heart, especially the changes after administration of DFP. The research still includes the measurement of the following parameters: Malondialdehyde (MDA) concentrations, Superoxide Dismutase (T-SOD), the activity of Glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and the concentration of essential elements in myocardium. From the result, aluminum overload was found and the content of lipid peroxidant products (Malondialdehyde, MDA) in the heart increased along with decrease of antioxidant enzyme (Glutathione peroxidase, GSH-Px). As for the essential elements, iron in the heart was decreased. Whereas after the treatment of DFP, the aluminum content in the heart reduced, the iron content recovered gradually, GSH-Px level increased significantly and DFP had no effects on other essential elements in myocardium.
