Shape-selective methylation of toluene with methanol was carried out in a fixed-bed reactor over modified nano-scale HZSM-5 zeolite catalyst, and the modified catalyst were characterized by SEM, XRD, TPR and TPD. The results show that the modification of TEOS greatly increases the selectivity to para-xylene, while the modification of Pt restrains the formation of olefins and improves the stability. In the optimized conditions, after 400 h reaction, the selectivity to para-xylene is 98.3%, and the conversion of toluene is 19.3%.
