2006-2007 Mohnarin report: Bacterial distribution and resistance in north China

Objective: To investigate the resistance of clinical isolates from hospitals in huabei area of China in 2006-2007. Methods: Bacterial susceptiblility testing was carried out according to an agreed protocol and standard. The results were analyzed by WHONET 5.4. Results: A total of 28,763 clinical isolates were collected from JUN of 2006 through JUN of 2007, of which Gram negative microorganisms and Gram positive cocci accounted for 67% and 33% respectively. Methicillin resistant strains in S. aureus (MRSA) and MRCNS accounted for an average of 62.9% and 77.4% respectively. No Staphylococcal isolates were found resistant to vancomycin, teicoplanin and linezolid. On average 47.1% of E. faecalis and 88.5% of E. faecium strains were resistant to high concentration gentamicin (120μg/disc). There are 2.3%, 2.8%, 2.5% of E. faecalis and 3.8%, 2.3%, 1.2% of E. faecium strains resistant to vancomycin, teicoplanin and linezolid respectively. About 59.2% of E. coli, 39.6% of Klebsiella pneumoniae and 11.9% of P. mirabilis isolates were the strains producting ESBLs. Isolates of Enterobacteriaceae were still highly sensitive to imipenem and meropenem, The average resistance rates was less than 1%. However, up to 30% strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa were resistant to the two carbapenems. In the 285 strains of S. pneumonia, 88.9%, 2.8% and 8.3% of strains were identified as penicillin susceptible (PSSP), intermediate (PISP) and resistant (PRSP) respectively. Beta-lactamase production was positive in 21.4% of H. influenzae isolates. Conclusions: Bacterial resistance was still on the rise, it was very important to reasonable application antibiotics and prevent the dissemination and outbreak of resistance bacterial.
