Abstract
Objective: To study the source of interleukin-8 (IL-8) in gingivitis and periodontitis and its correlation with clinical indexes. Methods: IL-8 contents in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) were measured in periodontitis, gingivitis and healthy controls with sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). In addition, IL-8 contents in serum were studied in periodontitis and healthy controls at the same time. Results: Circled digit one IL-8 level in GCF was markedly higher in periodontitis than in healthy controls (P<0.001) and than in serum of periodontitis (P<0.001). IL-8 level in GCF was not significantly different between adult periodontitis and gingivitis (P>0.05). Circled digit two There was a significant difference of IL-8 in GCF between adult gingivitis and healthy controls (P<0.05). Circled digit three IL-8 level in GCF of the patients with periodontitis had a positive correlation with BI, PD and AL (P<0.05). Conclusion: IL-8 in GCF is derived from local gingival tissues. IL-8 is not involved in bone absorption in the process of adult periodontitis. IL-8 level in GCF of patients with periodontitis has a positive correlation with BI, PD and AL.
