Choroid plexus carcinoma

Objective: To introduce the clinicopathological and immunohistochemical features of choroid plexus carcinoma. Methods: Analysed the clinical features, histopathologic findings and immunohistochemical staining in one case with choroid plexus carcinoma, and studied the diagnosis and differentiation of this disease with literature reviews. Results: The main histopathologic findings of choroid plexus carcinoma were papilliform structures with capillaries and fibrous tissue surrounded by columnar epithelium. Tumor cells were heterotypic, and karyokinesis phenomena were found. In immunohistochemical analysis, cytokeratin expression was positive, and glial fibrillary acidic protein, S-100 protein and vimentin presented focal positive reaction while epithelial membrane antigen, synaptophysin, neuronal specific enolase and neurofilament all presented negative reaction. Ki-67 label index was more than 20%. Periodic acid-Schiff's staining was negative. Conclusion: The diagnosis of choroid plexus carcinoma mainly depends on histopathologic examination and immunohistochemical label test. It must be differentiated from papillary ependymoma, metastatic carcinoma and papillary meningioma.
