Strain-insensitive and high temperature fiber sensor based on a Mach-Zehnder modal interferometer

•A strain-insensitive high temperature fiber sensor is proposed.•The sensor is based on a fiber modal interferometer.•A piece of small-core photosensitive fiber is used in the sensor.•The sensor owns the highest temperature sensitivity.•The temperature to strain cross sensitivity of the sensor is low.
