Gamma-glutamyltransferase is associated with cardiovascular and all-cause mortality: a meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies.

•Inconsistent findings regarding the association between elevated plasma GGT levels and cardiovascular and all-cause mortality risk•We performed a meta-analysis on plasma GGT levels and cardiovascular and all-cause mortality risk.•Elevated plasma GGT significantly increased the risk of cardiovascular and all-cause mortality, and the increase was an independent predictor.•Routine GGT assays will be helpful in identifying mortality risk.
