Experiment on spray characteristics of soybean oil methyl ester and diesel blends

Transient injection process of SME and diesel blends was investigated in this paper. High speed photography was used to study the transient spray cone angle and spray penetration. The axial velocity, radial velocity and distribution of particle size were measured using phase-Doppler particle anemometer (PDPA). Spray characteristics were clarified especially for the blend with large proportion of SME under high temperature condition. Spray atomization will deteriorate when mixing ratio of SME is over 50%. B75 shows good atomization with thermal enhancement prior to injection. B 75 exhibits a similar atomization to 0# diesel at fuel temperature of 473 K, but the influence of axial velocity on spray is weakened.
