Abstract
In recent years RDX has fallen out of favour as an ingredient in explosive formulations due its demonstrated failure to meet sensitivity requirements, and alternatives with suitable chemical and physical properties have been sought. 3-nitro-1, 2, 4-triazol-5-one (NTO) is a promising alternative that The VOD is 8200 m/s, impact sensitivity is 88 cm and adequate properties, may enable the development of a new class of low sensitivity mixed explosives for use in Insensitive Munitions (IM) by virtue of reduced sensitivity. this paper overviewed synthesis and some properties of NTO which includes, crystal, energetic salts, cast-cured explosives, pressable explosives, melt-castable explosive three series mixed explosives, As a key ingredient in low sensitivity mixed explosives, NTO based formulations were also reviewed.
