•Biocompatibility was imparted to SBC with HA via a “grafting to” strategy.•The HA-modified samples presented a low adhesiveness to fibroblast.•The HA modification stimulated the growth of fibroblast on the substrates.•Fibroblast growth exhibited a strong dependence on HA molecular weight.
