•We sampled saproxylic beetles in young thinned spruce stands and semi-natural stands.•Overall, the number of species was similar between the two habitat types.•Species composition differed, and thinned stands were more homogenous.•Thinned stands had fewer species of conservation concern, including red listed ones.
