煤炭一直是秦皇岛港的支柱货种,运量约占港口吞吐量的87%.2004年,我国北方沿海港口共下水煤炭3.12亿吨,其中秦皇岛港运煤达1.3亿吨,占沿海港口煤炭下水总量的41.6%,同比增长18%,其增长幅度略高于北方港口煤炭运输总体增长速度,中转数量位居全国乃至世界港口第一.
