Abstract
Studies by field ion microscopy are reported of the structure of tungsten specimens, irradiated by high intensity ion flux (∼1022 ions/cm2 per s) produced in a laser plasma of lead. Amorphousness of the tip specimen was observed; the types of defects produced are assessed. The ultimate mechanical properties of irradiated tip specimens are determined. Future directions of research are outlined.
