Transpedicular lumbosacral stabilization in spinal disorders: current aspects

In Europe, transpedicular screw fixation of spinal segments has become the surgical method of choice for a large number of spinal disorders. In the treatment of thoracolumbar fractures, this procedure appears to be superior to other instrumentation techniques with respect to fusion rates and clinical outcome. However, while dorsal transpedicular screw insertion provides rigid segmental fixation with deformity correction, its clinical relevance remains controversial in cases of spondylolisthesis and pain disorders of the lower back. The lack of prospective, randomized and controlled studies is lamented
