Abstract
•A technique of mono-axial electrospinning united with fluorination is established.•Facile and low-cost fabrication of silica hollow nanofibers is successfully realized.•Only fluorination can form silica hollow nanofibers among the halogenation processes.•Diameter and wall thickness are tunable by varying tetraethyl orthosilicate amounts.•Possible formation mechanism of silica hollow nanofibers is proposed and verified.
