•Parametric study shows that the oxalic acid dosage and reaction pH are the most significant factors for REE precipitation efficiency.•The complexation of ferric and oxalate ions significantly impact REE precipitation efficiency.•A high grade mixed rare earth oxalate was produced from a dilute feed solution that contained a high concentration of contaminants.
