Effect of Combined Use of Acupuncture and Medicine on Serum E_2 and Bone Mineral Density in Postmenopausal Osteoporosis Rats

Objective To investigate the effect of combined use of electroacupuncture and medicine on serum E 2 (S-E 2 ) and bone mineral density in a rat model of postmenopausal osteoporosis. Method A rat model was made. The rats were randomly allocated to model, electroacupuncture, medicine and acupuncture plus medicine groups. S-E 2 , and lumbar vertebrae 1-4 and right femoral bone mineral density (BMD) were measured after treatment with electroacupuncture, medicine or acupuncture plus medicine. Result S-E 2 , and lumbar vertebrae 1-4 and right femoral bone mineral density (BMD) increased significantly in the acupuncture plus medicine group compared with the model, electroacupuncture or medicine group (P0.05). Conclusion The combined use of acupuncture and medicine can effectively regulate the S-E 2 content, increase lumbar vertebrae 1-4 and right femoral bone mineral density and improve osteoporosis in postmenopausal osteoporosis rats.
