Reaction of tricarbonyl(η6-cycloheptatriene)manganese cation with phosphorus ylides

The phosphonium salt [(η5-C7H8-CH2PPh3)Mn(CO)3]ClO4 (2) has been prepared by the reaction of [(η5-C7H8-CH2PPh3)Mn(CO)3]ClO4 (1) with CH2PPh3. Deprotonation of 2 generated presumably [(η5- C7H8-CH2PPh3)Mn(CO)3] (3), which reacts with several kinds of aldehydes RCHO to yield olefin-containing complexes [(η5- C7H8-CHCHR)Mn(CO)3] (4) (RMe, Et, CHCH2, Ph,C6H4CH3-p, C6H4NO2-p, C6H4OMe-p). Reaction of 1 with stabilized ylides RC(O)CHPPh3 (RPh, Me, H, EtO, MeO) produces compounds [(η5-C7H8-CH2PPh3{−C(O)RMn(CO)3 (5) (RPh, Me, H, EtO, MeO) in high yields, which are too stable to react with aldehydes. An X-ray crystal structure of 4 (Ph) has been determined.
