Analysis of schistosomiasis prevalence in the City of Jingzhou from 2004 to 2009.

Objective To analyze trends in the prevalence of schistosomiasis in the City of Jingzhou,Hubei Province.Methods Annual reports on schistosomiasis control from 2004 to 2009 in nine counties of the City of Jingzhou were analyzed.The characteristics and prevalence of schistosomiasis were then described.Results Since 2004,schistosomiasis has decreased in the City of Jingzhou,the rate of schistosomiasis among residents was 2.69% for the City of Jingzhou in 2009,71.20% less than that in 2004(9.34%).There were 2 cases of acute schistosomiasis,96.30% less than the number in 2004(44 cases).For the 4 years from 2006 to 2009,there were no sudden outbreaks.The rate of schistosome infection in cattle fell to 1.87% in 2009,77.28% less than that in 2004(8.22%).Snail-ridden areas accounted for 31 084 hm2,1 582 hm2 less than areas in 2004.At the village level,the rate of both human and animal schistosomiasis dropped to 3%.Conclusion Thanks to the implementation of key aspects of schistosomiasis control,encouragement at the county(village) level,and coordinated comprehensive management by the provincial Ministry of Health,schistosomiasis control efforts have achieved significant results in the City of Jingzhou.
