DI/ODE: The Distributed I/O Development Environment

This paper describes software that can be linked to an application which normally performs its I/O functions on a local server and makes them dis- tributable and scalable in a manner which is ex- tremely transparent to the application. Through the use of this system, an application normally conne d to a single host can use a large number of back-end data repositories in a manner that is arbitrarily scal- able, manageable, and which can be extended on-the- y automatically and transparently to that applica- tion. NOTE: Lots of this stu is pure speculation at this moment. Many design decisions have been stated here, but they should serve as straw men. As details get implemented, this document should be updated to reect the actual implementation.
