The experimental environment of the Virgo project is briefly described. We present the current hardware and software architecture of the data acquisition system. Particular emphasis will be given to the timing system used to synchronize the various readouts and controls around the interferometer and to the distributed data collection scheme: its flexibility, modularity and processing capabilities.
