Statistics on the therapeutic cost of osteoporotic fractures from 2000 to 2004

Objective To enrich the data about the expenditures of osteoporptic fractures in our country by investigating the cost of therapeutic fractures from 2000 to 2004 in our hospital. Methods Data of the therapeutic cost and length of stay of the osteoporotic women aged over 55 with fractures of neck and intertrochanteric regions of the femur and admitted to the Department of Orthopedics of Fudan University Affiliated Zhongshan Hospital were collectred from 2000-2004. Results During these 5 years,261 women with fractures of the neck of the femur were admitted, about 52 per year.The average cost was around 11 967 yuan with an increase of 6.51% per year,and the average stay was 22 d;156 women were admitted for fractures of intertrochanteric regions of the femur(about 31 per year with an average cost of 11 363 yuan,20.32% increase per year),and average stay of 21 days. Conclusions Women who were sufferring from these two kinds of osteoporotic fractures cost about 4.90 million yuan during the period from 2000-2004 with the average cost of 0.98 million yuan per year,and this is increasing gradually.
