Abstract
Objective To study a new method for immediate repair of facial depression and for reducing Frey's syndrome after parotid resection. Methods Choose 68 cases of parotid gland tumors from January 2006 to January 2009 in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of the First Hospital affiliated to Bengbu Medical College. The cases were divided into two groups:one group with 20 patients was only treated with parotid tumor resection plus superficial lobectomy or parotidectomy;the other group was done with sternocleidomastoid muscle flap transfer during parotidectomy at the same time. The effect of treatment was observed by follow-up from six months to three years. Results The incidences of facial depression and Frey's syndrome were 16.67%(8/48) and 8.33%(4/48) in the experimental group and 90% and 55% in the control group. They were obviously difference in the two groups. Conclusion The method is an ideal operation with functional recovery;the sternocleidomastoid muscle flap transfer can obviously improve post-operative deformity, and prevent the incidence of Frey's syndrome.
