Confirmation of the presence of E0 in direct competition with M1 and E2

In two earlier papers experimental evidence was presented for the presence of electric monopole, E0, electron transitions in direct competition with magnetic dipole, M1, and electric quadrupole E2 internal conversion transitions. These experimental results confirmed a theoretical proposition originally advanced by Church and Weneser. However, a re-interpretation of these experiments has become necessary because of a recently discovered error in the theory of directional correlations involving conversion electrons. It appears that in the corrected theory the E2 conversion process is of crucial importance. A complete experimental re-investigation is required with special attention paid to the possible existence of dynamic contributions to the E2 internal conversion process. For this purpose a new experimental technique has been applied. With the new method minute dynamic admixtures to the normal E2 conversion matrix elements can be detected. No evidence was found for the presence of such dynamic factors and the E2 conversion process may therefore be treated as normal.
