Abstract
esophagitis at haseline was an exclusion criterion for randomization.Results.The mean follow-up after H.pylori eradication was 742 _+ 34 days (n~ax 1756).Patients with erosive esophagitis had grades 2-4.The mean age of the patients was 58.3 yrs, 81% were males, 15% were smokers and 30% drank alcohol, Refer to the table for incidence rates of erosive esophagitis. The overall incidence ot erosive esophagitis was 9/142 (6.3%).There was a sigmficant diff}rence m incidence by treatment. The esophagitis was asymptomatic in 78% of these patients.Conclusions.1) This study supports the hypothesis that H.pylori eradication m ulcer~patients may increase the incidence of erosive esophagitis during long-term tbllowup.2) The overall incidence of erosive esophagitis in the placebo group was 10.9% 3) Daily" full dose H2RA was associated with a sgmticantly lower incidence of erosive esophagitis in patients wifb ulcer hemorrhage who had H pylori eradicated.Supported by NIH DK49527 Etmphagitis No Etmpha~ltls Totals H2RA 2 (2,6%) 76 (97,4%} 78 7* (10,9%) 57 (89.1%} 64 9(63%) ....... 1~3 (93.7%)
