Comparison of miconazole suppositories and clotrimazole vaginal tablets in treating uncomplicated vulvovaginal candidiasis

AIM To compare the effect and safety of miconazole supositories and clotrimazole vaginal tablets in treating uncomplicated vulvovaginal candidiasis(VVC).METHODS Eighty patients suffering from VVC were randomly divided into treatment group and control group(40 patients for each)respectively treated with a single dose of miconazole nitrate suppository 1 200 mg and clotrimazole vaginal tablet 500 mg.Routine examination,core of clinical symptoms and physical signs,mycetology test and safety evaluation were done before the treatment and 7 and 28-35 days after the treatment.RESULTS Seven days after the treatment,there was one patient lost to follow-up in the treatment group and 2 patients in the control group,so 77 patients were followed in all.Before the treatment,there were no significant differences in pruritus,pain,congestive edema and increased secretions between the two groups(P 0.05).After 7 days and 28-35 days of the treatment,there were significant differences in those symptoms and signs compared to those before the treatment(P 0.05),with no significant differences between the two groups(P 0.05).After 7 days and 28-35 days of the treatment,the overall effective rate was 87%(34/39)and 95%(37/39)in the treatment group and 82%(31/38)and 95%(35/38)in the control group,respectively,with no significant differences in clinical efficacy between the two groups(P 0.05).Adverse reactions were mild in the two groups and they were relieved without any treatment in one or two days.CONCLUSION The effect and safety of miconazole suppositories and clotrimazole vaginal tablet are similar in the treatment of VVC.
